The ASUS ROG Strix XG27UCS gaming monitor recently hit the market and has proven quite poplar amongst the gaming community, and for good reason. With impressive specs and technology, this monitor promises to deliver a seamless and impressive gaming experience. Featuring a high resolution 27 inch panel, super fast refresh rate and vibrant colour accuracy, the XG27UCS is designed to cater to gamers of all types, whether that be competitive FPS or those who crave immersion. Let's dive a little deeper into how the XG27UCS performs, looks and whether or not it lives up to what it says on paper.
The XG27UCS has a sleek, modern design with that typical ROG flair. It features a relatively slim bezel and a very large but functional stand. As mentioned the ROG matte finish and aggressive angles give it that “gamery” feel without overdoing it by throwing massive amounts of RGB lighting like a lot of monitors seem to have these days.
The build quality is top notch, its solid stand provides good stability and allows for a fairly good range of movement including height adjustment, tilt, pivot and swivel ensuring a perfect viewing angle. If the stand isn't for you, it has a standard VESA mount compatibility to allow for mounting to walls and monitor arms. The added “device” slot on the base of the stand adds an excellent place to store plugged in devices.
The XG27UCS boasts a 4K, 27-inch IPS panel. IPS panels known for their excellent colour accuracy and wide viewing angles ensures the colours remain consistent and vibrant whatever angle you are watching from. The combination of the colours and the 4K resolution are particularly beneficial for immersive gaming and HD content. All of that combines with a refresh rate of up to 160Hz refresh delivers a truly smooth and un-compromised gaming experience.
The XG27UCS is also compatible with ELMB Sync, NVIDIA G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, which helps eliminate screen tearing and stuttering by making sure your monitor is displaying exactly what your GPU is putting out. This and a 1ms (GTG) response time. This can be crucial to deliver a smooth, responsive gaming experience especially in fast paced games such as first person shooters etc.
Probably the biggest standout feature for me, and one that really sets this monitor apart from the majority of an oversaturated market, is the USB-C port with DisplayPort Alt Mode with 65W power delivery. This has been particularly useful for me to connect devices such as my Samsung tablet for DEX mode, and my ROG Ally X for playing my ROG on a bigger screen. In addition to the USB-C we get a DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.1 port for complete flexibility on connecting your devices and connecting devices for high resolution and high refresh.
One feature we get that I can see benefit in, however one I never really seemed to take advantage of, is the AI Game Plus technology. Essentially what this does is uses AI to analyse what is on your screen in real time and does things like brighten dark areas on the fly effectively providing an advantage in low light environments. Personally I didn't use this like I should due to playing in a dark room and really not needing this as a feature. It could however prove invaluable for some.
The OSD menu is quite user friendly, using the joystick inconveniently located on the back right hand side, it offers the chance to change a bunch of settings, from presets, to input selection and things like ELMB etc. This allows for quick adjustments with the correct monitor placement. The biggest issue here for me is the positioning of the joystick. Having buttons like this on one side of the monitor really limits its useability. I use a dual monitor setup and was unable to easily use this without moving either this or my other monitor next to it which became a little annoying when getting to know my monitor and making many adjustments.
Positioned very well in terms of pricing on the market, the XG27UCS is currently around $750-$800 at the time of writing this review, this monitor is a very serious option if you're looking for a new monitor. It comes packed with premium features, Excellent colour accuracy and a combination of high resolution and fast refresh rate really justify the investment in a quality monitor.
Overall, if you're looking for a top quality monitor that's going to deliver excellent image quality, smooth gameplay and the most up to date connectivity options the Strix XG27UCS is definitely not a product you should sleep on. I think you'll struggle to find a better monitor (from a reputable brand like ASUS) at its price point.
