One of my favourite childhood pastimes is Lego. I never had many sets growing up, but the one I played with at home or a friend's house was always inventive and fascinating to put together. Lego video games have been everywhere since the 1990s, and the latest release we have here is Fingersoft's Lego Hill Climb Adventures for Apple Arcade. Lego Hill Climb Adventures was previously available for iPhone and Android users, but Apple Arcade now has its dedicated version. The Apple Arcade release of Lego Hill Climb Adventures is a lot of fun, and the amount of charm this game offers is wonderful. It may get repetitive in some of the missions you have to do, but Lego Hill Climb Adventures is the first Apple Arcade game in some time that I can see myself coming back to often.

BRICK BY BRICK

Lego Hill Climb Adventures on Apple Arcade follows in the footsteps of previous Lego games by creating an entire world made entirely out of Lego. We have seen this visual style in practically every Lego game ever made, but I loved the visuals here. Driving through each area, from forest trails to frosty mountains, you can see the detailing in the visuals. Whenever you crash into an obstacle, building or gate post, the entire construct will break apart into small and large Lego pieces. I am always excited whenever I see detailing like that in a Lego game, and Lego Hill Climb Adventures for Apple Arcade is no exception.

The amount of content in this game is excellent, especially for a mobile game. There are dozens upon dozens of main missions to do, loads of side missions and plenty of different cosmetics and cars to unlock. You can either play through the game doing the main and side missions, or you can freely drive through each area looking for blueprints, collectibles and currency to upgrade your character and your cars. The free roam mode is one of the best gameplay modes in Lego Hill Climb Adventures because it gives you the most replay value in the game. It's impossible to get every collectible in one run through of an area; you may not be able to reach every cliff surface or have to go down one specific branching path in a run. Therefore, you can then take the time to upgrade your car and revisit the level, gaining more speed to reach higher surfaces and subsequently follow the different path to collect the other items. Lego Hill Climb Adventures on Apple Arcade offers a wealth of content, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with a good chunk of it.

PIMP YOUR RIDE

There are a few different types of currency in Lego Hill Climb Adventures on Apple Arcade. You have coins, red bricks, grey bricks, rainbow bricks and gems. The coins can be used to upgrade your vehicle's stats, whether it be the car's power, handling or safety. Red and grey bricks work in tandem to build new vehicles and areas for you to explore. Rainbow bricks work similarly to the red and grey bricks, but they can also be used to unlock blueprints found in the free roam areas. Gems are similar to coins, but instead of spending them on upgrades to your vehicles, you can use them to buy more bricks, coins, and other available items from the in-game shop. There are numerous cars, areas, and things to collect in Lego Hill Climb Adventures on Apple Arcade, providing enough content for dozens of hours of play.

Driving is the main thing you will be doing in Lego Hill Climb Adventures on Apple Arcade. The controls are straightforward; you have an accelerator pedal on the right side of the screen and a brake pedal on the left side. Your job is to keep your car going until you get to the end of a level by balancing the use of the brake and accelerator. If you overuse the accelerator, your car can spin out and flip onto its back. You also need to use these pedals strategically when driving over large jumps. Applying the brake will cause the car to flip forward, and applying the accelerator will cause it to flip backward. Some missions of the game task you with exploiting this by achieving flips and wheelies, but doing it too much risks damaging your vehicle. The controls are responsive and have no delay whatsoever, so utilising them in the different missions is rarely a problem.

One thing Lego Hill Climb Adventures on Apple Arcade sadly lacks is variety in the missions themselves. Granted, there are lots of missions in the game, so it only seems natural for some of them to repeat the same objective. However, the game only really has around 4-5 different mission types, including races, breaking obstacles, finding civilians and doing tricks. Due to the game's 2D nature, it can also make each area blend into one another, despite the changes in its scenery. The game is still very enjoyable, but it lacks variety in its missions, resulting in a repetitive and slightly boring experience in terms of mission objectives.

LEGO HILL CLIMB ADVENTURES - APPLE ARCADE REVIEW: VERDICT

Lego Hill Climb Adventures is a delightful Apple Arcade game that I can see myself revisiting. The visuals are great, as are the game's controls and replay value. Sadly, there is not a lot of variety in the game's missions, and you will find yourself replaying the same mission types within the first hour of playing. However, I must admit that this game is great fun to drive through and explore. If you have an Apple Arcade subscription, consider giving Lego Hill Climb Adventures a look.
